What works when you want to lose weight?
The answer seems simple: Any program or diet that allows for consuming less calories than you burn will result in weight loss.
But why isn't that the end of the story? The sad reality is that a large proportion of dieters yo-yo and end up gaining more than they lost in the long run. I have heard it again and again: "Successful dieters" who have lost hundreds of pounds, repeatedly. One woman told me she yo-yo dieted her way up to obesity from a normal healthy weight with just this formula of gaining more than she lost after the diets ended.
What's going on here is that typically people who end up on diets have learned to think about and use food to cope with a multitude of problems whereas people who don't have issues with their weight cope in other ways. The trick is not only to learn new ways of coping, but also to un-learn how you think about food as a solution for comfort, strength, or whatever.
It's all in your head.
